Stift Klosterneuburg

The history of Klosterneuburg Monastery began in the year 1114—and with it the history of the Klosterneuburg Monastery Winery. Traditionally associated with scholarship and art, viticulture ripened under the caring eyes of the Augustinian canons into the most important economic sector in Klosterneuburg.  At an age of roughly 900 years, Klosterneuburg Monastery Winery is not only one of the oldest wine estates in Austria, but also one of the largest with its 108 hectares of cultivated land. The variety of terrain is unique: The wines of Klosterneuburg Monastery Winery grow in selected vineyards in Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf, four wine-growing areas with differing characteristics. At each of these four locations, precisely those types of grapes are grown that correspond best to the prevailing conditions.  The cellars of Klosterneuburg are four stories beneath the historic Baroque monastery, the walls of which date back to the ancient Romans.  Klosterneuburg is also the first winery in Austria to be designated carbon-neutral by the Austrian government. The historic monastery attracts over 150,000 visitors per year.

  • Klostersekt

This classic sekt is a blend of 60% Welschriesling (Italian Riesling) and 40% Grüner Veltliner. The ripe grapes are harvested earlier to ensure an aromatic and fresh taste.  This sparkling wine is superb balanced with a lemon citrus acidity
and finish. The fine and soft mousse makes this sparkling wine to a tingly experience. The wine is aged on the lees for minimum nine months.
  • Klostersekt Rosé

This Rosé Sparkling is made of Austirans most important red wine grape: Blauer Zweigelt. The ripe grapes are harvested earlier to ensure an aromatic and fresh taste. Elegant and pink. A liaison of refreshing treat and charming perlage makes this Rosé Sparkling a pleasure not only as an aperitif. Gooseberry, melon and raspberry dance jaunty in the glass. This light and fruity Rosé infatuates in every sense.

  • Wiener Nussberg Gemischter Satz

This is a field blend of Gruner Veltliner, Riesling and  Pinot Blanc. “Gemischter Satz“ is from the Nußberg, which is the most famous vinyard in Vienna.  This wine presents itself youthful and fresh. Because of its multi-layered bouquet of green Apple, flower flavour and notes of stone-fruit together with luscious acidity, it offers uncomplicated pleasure. This “Gemischter Satz“ is a very fruitful and lively wine, which matches perfectly with light dishes.

  • Zweigelt Tattendorf

A Zweigelt from the place where Zweigelt was invented. In 1922, Professor Zweigelt created the varietal at the Klosterneuburg School of Winemaking by crossing Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent.  Deep ruby red with a youthful character, a strong aroma of ripe dark cherries, juicy and powerful on the palate, with elegant extract sweetness and a subtle tannin structure. Aged 8 months in large oak barrels.

  • St. Laurent Thermenregion

The St. Laurent variety, which comes from France and belongs to the Burgundy family, requires a warm and none-too-moist growing environment, since it is particularly vulnerable to frost. The early-ripening St. Laurent grape enjoys ideal conditions on the alluvial gravel soil of the vineyards worked by the
Klosterneuburg Monastery Wine Estate in Tattendorf. Colored deep ruby red and with an aroma subtly reminiscent of fully ripened cherries and sour cherries, it presents itself to the palate as consummately homogenous, fruity and juicy.
